Joel Barkman 2010 Business Person of the Year

Warrenton, VA – The Fauquier County Chamber of Commerce is pleased to announce the 2010 recipient of the coveted Business Person of the Year Award is Joel Barkman, President of Golden Rule Builders, Inc..

Mr. Barkman has worked tirelessly in the building industry as chapter president of the Northern Virginia Building Industry Association, and has volunteered on many committees including the Fauquier County Business Advisory Council, and numerous others. He is a respected Elder in his church, and has helped those in need by making contributions and raising funds for the area's homeless shelters and for those in need of affordable housing. A leader in the "green building" movement, this year's winner is a proponent of responsible building practices, sustainable design, and environmental stewardship - all of which help make for a stronger Fauquier County.

The Chamber also recognized three outstanding businesses. The Fauquier Bank was honored with the Large Business of the Year Award. For over 108 years, this business has served local business and our community, and has literally assisted in the building and growing of Fauquier County through the years. With growth came expansion: The Trust Department was established in 1919, and a second branch of this business was opened in The Plains in 1926. Having weathered the Great Depression, several wars, and many periods of recessions followed by periods of expansive growth, today, there are 10 established branches of this historic business. As a full service financial institution, The Fauquier Bank has built its reputation on trust and sound business judgment, a business that is deeply embedded into our community, and a loyal supporter of the Fauquier County Chamber of Commerce.

Pearmund Cellars, received the Small Business of the Year Award. Founder Chris Pearmund serves on the Fauquier Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, and will be Chairman of the Board in 2011. Pearmund Cellars is an agricultural business, and a tourism destination, established in 2003 following almost 13 years of cultivation and improvement. By their second anniversary, Pearmund Cellars’ farm production reached the maximum amount of product enabled, and by 2006, maximum production rose by the thousands. Pearmund Cellars has long been a strong supporter of the Fauquier County Chamber of Commerce, sponsoring events and programs, and being represented on the Board of Directors. Currently producing 9 products, Pearmund Cellars was built using the latest geo-thermal technology and continues to work with the environment to produce farm and eco-friendly products. Voted Virginia's Favorite Winery in 2007, and winner of numerous other awards for fine Virginia wine.

Fauquier Faith Partners, Inc. received the Non-Profit Business of the Year Award, an honor recognizing the outstanding service of a local non-profit organization. Fauquier Faith Partners, Inc. was established in 2007 by a group of individuals committed to serving victims of domestic violence and abuse in Fauquier County. Through legal and emergency shelter services, and biblically sound training, former victims are helped, and through awareness seminars, the community has been made more aware of the challenge of domestic violence and the need for these services. This year's winning Not-for-Profit winner provides not only shelter to the victims and their children as well as life skills and faith-based training and support, they also assist in implementing a course of action for the for the abuser through accountability, support and faith based training so that they are offered the opportunity to positively change their life and stop the generational cycle of abuse in the family.

The Lord Fairfax Small Business Development Center also honored Perry Casto of Allied Associates International with the 2010 Small Business Veteran of the Year Award.

The awards were presented Wednesday, November 10th, at the 24th Annual Meeting and Awards Dinner at The Inn At Kelly’s Ford.
